PREVENTING FLOOD DAMAGE

Preventing Flood Preventing Flood

Floods are one of the world's most common and devastating natural disasters, causing extensive loss of property and life. Flood damage can be overwhelming. However, before you even require storm restoration services, make sure to review tips for preventing, or at least limiting, flood damage when you know that flooding is a possibility.

Negative Effects of Flood Damage

  • Swollen house framing
  • Damaged electrical outlets
  • Damaged drywall
  • Mold and mildew growth
  • Damaged furniture
  • Damaged flooring
  • Pest invasions

How to Prevent Flood Damage

  • Elevation – Elevation offers the best protection against flooding. New buildings are expected to be built at or above the level of the area's base flood if they reside in locations with a high flooding risk.
  • Floodwalls – Floodwalls are self-supporting barriers that resemble privacy fences. Their heavy construction keeps them from sliding or falling over. Floodwalls also prohibit water from seeping underneath. Floodwalls can be formed from cement blocks, wood, poured concrete, or bricks, and they can prevent destruction caused by erosion, floating debris, and unequal water pressure on the building’s walls.
  • Stop Sewer Backup – Floodwater can infiltrate sewer systems and back up into buildings. To limit the effects of sewer backups, install a flap valve on the single sewer line.
  • Plastic Sheeting – Plastic sheeting can offer temporary protection from flooding to outside walls. The plastic should be placed on structures that extend from the building so that the weight of the water does not press against the building and nearby landscaping is minimally affected. When using plastic sheeting in a sandbag levee, cover all doors, drains, windows, and other openings to prevent sewer backup.
