April Showers Bring May Flowers

3/24/2023 (Permalink)

April is around the corner which could mean rain. Is your property prepared? Here are some tricks to help keep rain from coming into your home and causing damage.

  • Regular Roof Maintenance – Your roof is the first line of protection from the rain coming down. Even a small crack can create massive water damage throughout your property.
  • Keep your Rain Gutters Clear - Blocked rain gutters will force rainwater down your property walls and some of it can seep into the property. This also can encourage mold growth inside of your walls.
  • Repair and Seal all your Windows – A broken, or unsealed window will quickly invite water into your property’s walls.
  • Sweep Away Debris – Debris such as leaves, plastic, and paper can quickly clop up drains and retain pockets of water against the outer walls of your home causing flooding in your home.
  • Create a Slope to Move Water Away From your Property – If you move dirt away from the walls of your property the slopes will lead the water away from your property.
  • Install a Divert Downspout at your Property – This is a device added to the bottom of your roof downspout that moves the rainwater four feet away from your home helping protect the foundation.
  • Build a Swale Ditch – This is a ditch lined with rocks or pavers it also keeps the rainwater away from your foundation and is usually done with flat yards.
  • Exterior French Drain – These are pipes and trenches that are designed to drain groundwater from the property’s foundation.
  • Increase the Size of Exterior Drains – The larger your drains are, the less chance they will have to get clogged.
  • If flooding caused by rainwater is a reoccurring issue for your property, you may want to – Install a Sump Pump – Installing a sump pump to your foundations makes it so that whenever water rises to a certain level it automatically activates and starts to drain water 10 feet away from your property.

The Water Drying Process is Different, Depending on The Type of Material

10/17/2022 (Permalink)

When trying to tackle water damage, it is important to remember that water has a distinct advantage. Water can flow and move into cracks and crevasses, saturating areas that are not easy for us to get to. We need lots of access to the area that needs to be dried out to directly dry where the damage is. This means that we will have to modify the space temporarily to access hidden areas, if need be. For some materials that is not an option (stone, tile, granite, brick cannot simply be opened up to get to the area wet under or inside it without ruining the structure).

The key to proper drying is proper access. For example, when it comes to masonry walls, the drying is largely affected by its ability to evaporate on both sides (interior and exterior) of the wall. When it comes to the outside of the wall, this can either benefit or negate drying as the weather outside will affect the drying process. For this, the removal of finishes with low permeability may be done to help with the drying process.

No matter the case, SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda is trained and certified to help the Greater Sacramento Area with all its water restoration needs. When your property is faced with disaster, give us a call (916) 991-1522. We are a locally owned business with the national resources to solve your home or commercial needs, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holiday’s.

Water intrusion and damage can be a headache inside your home or business. Prevent rainwater from causing a mitigation mess ahead of time with these tips:

Clean Rain Gutters - A clogged rain gutter can send water spilling down the exterior wall, which can result in water between the walls causing water damage and mold growth on the backside of the interior walls.

Roof Maintenance – It can seem obvious that water intrusion is a result of a leaky roof. But, for the most part people imagine a visible waterfall of water coming from the ceiling in their house. This is not always the case.  The smallest tear in the rubber protector under your shingles can cause water to slowly be leaking onto the structure wood inside your roof, causing mold and wood rot. Structural damage is never good for your house.

Window Repairs – If the caulking around your windows were not sealed correctly or weather has cause deterioration, water can be leaking into your walls.

Being Prepared Helps to Stay Safe During a Storm or Flood

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda wants everyone in the community to be prepared and safe during flooding season. You can prepare for a flooding emergency before it happens.

Before a Flood Prepare

  • Know the risk of flooding in your area and get flood insurance if in a flood area. (Home insurance does not cover water that comes into a house from outside, you need flood specified insurance to be covered. Talk to your agent and know you are covered.)
  • Elevate the furnace, water heater, and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk.
  • Install “check valves” to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.
  • Keep a good amount of water bottles in your home ready in case of any emergency.
  • If in a high risk flood area you may want to construct barriers to stop floodwaters from entering your home. Also stock up on sandbags ahead of time! During a flood watch sandbag locations can be found by calling 311. (In past years, local suppliers of sandbags have ran out as the rain continued and flooding got worse so it is important to be prepared ahead of time.)
  • Follow the directions provided via media and by the Police and Fire Departments to ensure that you are heading in the safest possible direction.
  • Create a plan and practice the plan. Talk with family members about where to go and what to do during a flood emergency. (Practicing your plan with your family helps the whole family but is especially helpful to the younger ones in your family. It can not only help them know exactly what to do in the situation but also help keep them from being as scared during the flood.)

Don’t forget your pets! Have an emergency kit ready for them as well including their transportation needs, carriers, and leashes.

If you are faced with a flood on your property, stay safe and give SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda a call with all of your water damage concerns at 916-991-1522. We have professionals ready to answer your questions 24/7.

Types of Water Damage Contamination

2/4/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO cleans sewage backups, too! Here is what qualifies for each category of contaminated water.

  1. Clean Water: This is most commonly found from a clean source of water, such as a leaky faucet, water main, or supply line. Water damage is water damage, so even though this water is drinkable water, it still does damage to your home and needs to be taken care of accordingly.
  2. Gray Water: This is “relatively clean” water that has been used in some capacity by a washing machine, shower, or sink. This category includes water with some urine but no feces, from a toilet overflow. This water can still contain bacteria or viruses and can quickly turn into “category 3: black water” if untreated. Contact with this type of water should be avoided.
  3. Black Water: Most contaminated type of water, this is sewage. This type of water can cause severe illness if ingested. Contact with this type of water should be avoided. Black water can also be from flooding rivers or streams, as this water has never been filtered from the environment and may still contain microbes, bacteria, or viruses.

NOTE: Sewer backups ARE an emergency. Water from these systems may contain many bacteria, microbes, or viruses. It is important to get the qualified help you need to tackle these issues safely with the proper equipment. There are three classifications for water contamination, and when working with SERVPRO we properly classify these types to provide you with the service that you need.

If you have a clean water, gray water, or black water loss event, call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda to get professional help with your water restoration needs. Call (916)-991-1522.

Water Damage Category is a Real Thing

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

What is the categories of water damage?

Categories of water damage are designated by the type of water that caused the damage. The lower level of water sanitation puts the water damage in a greater numbered category. This helps us know how to proceed with the best restoration and mitigation plan.

Category 1 Water: “Clean Water”, is water that does not pose significant harm to humans. Category 1 water is clean water from a direct source such as a faucet that has had contact with structural and content surfaces. A category 1 water loss can become a higher category as the water sits for longer and dissolves structural and content surfaces contaminating the water.

Some examples include, tub or sink overflow without contaminants, water supply lines, melting snow, ice and rain fall.

Category 2 Water: “Gray Water”, is water that has the ability to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed or exposed to humans. It contains a considerable amount of biological, physical, and/or chemical contamination. Category 2 water can contain microorganisms/bio-contaminants (fungal, bacterial, algae), chemicals, and/or physical hazards.

Some examples include: Overflows from toilet bowls, fire protection sprinklers, water released from dishwashers and washing machines.

Category 3 Water: “Black Water”, is water that has a probability of causing discomfort, or sickness if contaminated water sources are consumed or exposed to humans. It contains grossly unsanitary water containing pathogenic agents, arising from sewage or other contaminated water sources.

Some examples include: Sewage, rising water from rivers or streams

We Have the Right Equipment for Water Mitigation!

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

Why choose SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda for water damage in your property? Because we have the knowledge, and best equipment to get the job done right!

Our team will answer your call with fast action, exceptional equipment and trained personnel. We know that using proper equipment makes a significant difference. The right tool for the job is vital for timely mitigation.

Psychrometrics

Psychrometry is the study of the air and its properties. The properties of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point are measured to evaluate air conditions in the structure. This knowledge allows our technicians to create the proper atmosphere for more efficient drying.

Water can damage materials two ways:

  1. Materials absorb water through direct contact.
  2. Materials absorb water from the air.

Thus, measuring the moisture in the air is critical to the drying process.

As restoration specialist, technicians at SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda must use their knowledge of Psychrometrics to establish an environment favorable for drying. But another key part to making and keeping this environment is proper use of our equipment.

Detection Equipment

Before beginning work it is important for our technicians to scope the job. Scoping is, locating the areas of the structure that water has intruded and defining the extent to which the structure and contents have absorbed moisture. This is where moisture detection devices come in, because just by looking at the structures and contents you cannot measure just how wet it is. In fact some of the structure won’t even look wet but inside it can have lots of moisture, that if left can then cause mold growth. Here are some of the detection equipment we use.

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets and carpet padding.
  • Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. We use these to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermo-hygrometers measure both temperature and relative humidity. With both of these readings our technicians can use their psychrometric knowledge to calculate specific humididty, dew point and vapor pressure.
  • Infrared Cameras can identify the location and extent of moisture in walls very effectively.
  • Manometers allows our technicians to measure the difference in air pressure when creating a negative air pressure environment.

Extraction Equipment

Extraction is the most effective method of removing moisture form a structure. When water is extracted quickly, the environment can usually be dried much faster.

  • Extractors are equipment that use water extraction in the process of removing all standing water and excess moisture from the property. They are used in cleaning carpets and upholstery, as well as removing water from floors following water damage. Extractors can either be truck-mounted or portable, allowing for greater access inside structures.

Air Moving Equipment

Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level, which results in reducing drying time. As airflow at the surface level increases, the moisture in the air increases. This moisture is then eliminated through proper use of dehumidification equipment. Many different types of air movers are used depending on the location of the moisture and the surface being dried.

Dehumidification Equipment

Dehumidifiers pull in the moist, humid air and then discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moister from wet materials.

  • Refrigerant Dehumidifiers work similarly to air conditioners.
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers use chemicals, called desiccants, which readily absorb moister from the air.

Water Leak In House Water Leak Can Damage Your House

Water coming from the ceiling is a symptom of some other home system that is leaking. When a ceiling shows signs of water damage and dripping water, the place to look is in one of two home systems: the roofing system or the plumbing system. Ceiling leaks may be evidenced by actual water dripping down, but before the problem escalates to that point, you may see blistered or peeling paint, or discoloration over a spot in the ceiling.

It also could also be a pipe burst

Follow these steps to control damages from a broken pipe:

  • Immediately turn off your home’s water supply at the main cutoff valve.
  • Drain pipes by running cold water faucets and flushing toilets.
  • Locate and fix the break with epoxy putty or a pipe repair clamp.
  • Thoroughly dry affected areas by running fans for approximately 2-5 days depending on the severity.

If repairs and cleanup turn out to be more than you can handle, contact your insurance company. Most homeowner policies cover burst pipe water damage, and you should let your agent know you'd like to hire SERVPRO North Highlands/Rio Linda.

Our teams are always ready to help you with busted pipes, water damage and repairs. We take care of it all, and we also offer certified mold remediation services. When a broken pipe at the house tries to ruin your winter, give us a call here at SERVPRO North Highlands/Rio Linda.

WHY YOU NEED TO RESTORE & REMODEL YOUR KITCHEN AFTER FLOOD DAMAGE

7/18/2020 (Permalink)

Kitchen Restoration Kitchen Restoration

Flooding is never an easy event to deal with. The resulting emotional toll coupled with water damage makes it difficult to cope with. While any damage to your home is stressful, hiring a professional company like SERVPRO North Highlands/ Rio Linda to restore and remodel your kitchen after flood damage is pivotal to the safety of your home.

From preventing structural issues to avoiding mold exposure, here is why you need to restore and remodel your kitchen after flood damage

One of the most visually obvious issues with water damage is the resulting buckling of flooring, cabinets, and wallpaper. When water seeps under your tile or wood flooring, it warps the foundation beneath, causing noticeable buckling of the vinyl. Wood absorbs a lot of water, which causes the wood to deteriorate and lose integrity. This buckling isn’t only unsightly, but also creates an environment where moisture can get trapped, allowing mold and mildew to grow and spread.

Remodeling Removes Mold & Mildew

One of the most dangerous aspects of water damage is the resulting mildew and mold that builds up, grows, and then spreads if not removed. If left unaddressed, mold causes structural damage to your home which can spread and create even worse problems in the future.

WHY IS WATER DAMAGE SO COSTLY?

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

Water Leak In House Water Leak In House

Water can be a destructive force. It can cause major damage in an instant, yet we need it to survive. Our homes contain a plumbing system that transports water behind the walls and under the floors. However, when the water finds a way to escape the confines of your plumbing, or intrudes because of rain, it can have no mercy on your possessions!

Water Damage Sources

The primary sources of water damage in a household can come from any one of the following:

  • A leaky toilet
  • A broken water main line in the ground
  • Burst pipes in your plumbing
  • Leaking roof
  • Structural issues

Bursting pipes is a reminder that, even though your plumbing system is good at what it does, it still requires maintenance and repairs from a professional plumber from time to time. If you do not catch a leak immediately, there is the potential for thousands of dollars of damage to occur. And so the question becomes, what can make water damage cost a homeowner an arm and a leg? Restoration & Mold!

The cost of an entire water restoration project can be many thousands of dollars, depending on the damage, the size of the house, and the affected areas. Aside from structural damage to your home, you have to consider any costs in replacing furniture, or other personal belongings.

Some routine costs to consider when there is a water leak, a flood, or if a pipe bursts in your home, are:

  • Drywall replacement
  • Replacing flooring
  • Replacing a subfloor in your bathroom
  • Additional fees may be needed on carpeting, cabinetry, paint, trim, etc.

In Conclusion

Water damage is costly for homeowners and there are no ways to get around this fact. If it is left unaddressed, it could cause further harm to your home and potentially your health. Mold must be remediated, due to its hazardous nature, and water needs to be contained to ensure your home remains in good condition. Call SERVPRO North Highlands/ Rio Linda can help today.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR HOME FLOODS

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

2020 Water Damage Flood 2020 Water Damage Flood

While many things can be done to minimize your home flood damage prior to a flood, it can be entirely possible that you could find yourself in a situation that is not only unexpected, but that you are unprepared for. Water is a leading cause of home damage and can be caused by an array of situations, either natural or man-made, but most commonly:

  • Heavy rains
  • Burst/leaking pipes
  • Malfunctioning sump-pump
  • Sewer buildup

Knowing how to react during and even after a flood, may help keep your family and your home safe.

Safety First: Worry about immediate dangers.

The most important thing to keep in mind is, if at any time the situation seems precarious, and you or your family are at risk, remove yourselves from the situation. Securing safety for you, your family, and your pets are foremost. Things to consider when assessing safety in your home during flooding:

  1. Look for any structural damage that may have been caused by the flood. Water can compromise the walls of a home or building.
  2. Utilities should be turned off immediately, if they can be reached, to reduce the risk of electrical hazards or gas leaks. If you need assistance during this, contact your utility companies immediately.
  3. Flood water may be contaminated! Children and animals should be kept out of any standing water. Any adults needing to enter standing water should do so with rubber boots and gloves.

Removing water and drying out your home.

After the safety situation is dealt with, it is time to properly take care of your home and possessions. If possible, stop all sources of water. Removing water will differ depending on the situation and amount of water in your home. Pumps can be used to help remove the water out of your home. Once water gets to a more manageable level, industrial dryers can remove any moisture in carpets and on floors.

If you don't act fast after a flood, mold can set in within hours and create a health hazard for you and your family.

How to Clean Up Your Basement after a Flood

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Street Flooding Street Flooding

Things to do immediately after a basement flood

  • First, make sure that it’s safe to enter your home. Check for structural damage, such as cracks, holes or warping.
  • Immediately shut off the electrical supply to your home at the main circuit breaker. Be aware of electrical wires that are under the water level.
  • If the flooding is due to a burst water pipe in your home, shut off the main water supply.
  • Avoid direct contact with floodwater, which may contain dangerous contaminants. If you must walk through floodwater, wear protective clothing, such as disposable overalls, eyewear, gloves, and a face mask.
  • Call your insurance company, take photos, and document all damaged items. Make a list of the belongings to restore and to discard. This will help you with your insurance claim.
  • If you have a sump pump installed, wait for it to drain the floodwater. If the pump has a backup battery, it should drain the water even if the power is off.

Basement flood cleanup tips

  • Quickly remove affected items from floodwater to avoid mold growth, warping, and rot. Items that suck up a lot of water (like carpet and furniture) can usually be salvaged if they have been in floodwater for less than 24 hours. Otherwise, throw them away.
  • Completely dry the basement to avoid further damage and mold growth.
    • Suck up the water with a sump pump and a Wet-Dry vacuum.
    • Use dehumidifiers and ventilate the basement as much as possible. Use fans and open windows if the weather allows, but not when the outside humidity is high.
    • Remove the baseboards (if present) and drill 1-inch holes halfway between the wall studs at the base of the walls. This allows moist air from behind the walls to evaporate.
    • Properly drying a flooded basement may take up to two weeks.
  • After everything has been dried, clean and disinfect the basement contents and structure (walls, foundation floor, drywall, etc.). You may need to discard the drywall and wood if a lot of mold has developed.
  • Don’t use bleach to clean mold because bleach kills live mold but not mold spores. Household detergent is preferable.
  • Regardless of the size of the mold-affected area, strongly consider contacting a mold remediation company. They can identify the moisture source and restore the moldy surfaces efficiently and without risk of mold recurrence.
  • Make any necessary repairs, such as filling foundation cracks, replacing damaged drywall with a mold-resistant type, and sealing windows and vents.
  • How to prevent basement flooding
    • Clean your gutters and downspouts and divert rainwater six feet away from the house. Also, make sure the ground is slightly sloping away from your home.
    • Install an emergency generator to provide your house with electricity during blackouts.
    • Install a sump pump that automatically drains water from your basement and prevents water from rising. Choose one with a backup battery.
    • Seal openings or cracks in the walls, floors, foundations, and windows of your house.
    • Install porous pavement around your home to help absorb rainwater and thawed snow.
    • Ensure that your drainage systems and plumbing are working properly. Have them checked periodically by a professional.
  • For basement flood cleanup, call the SERVPRO North Highlands/ Rio Linda restoration professionals

How to Prevent Winter Water Damage in Your Home

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage Winter Water Damage Winter

Prevent Frozen Pipes and Pipe Bursts

Pipes in the crawl space, outside walls, and in the attic are vulnerable to freezing and bursting in cold temperatures.

  • Close all cracks, holes, and openings in outside walls and foundation, near water pipes, with caulk.
  • Insulate water pipes in unheated areas, such as the crawl space, basement, garage, attic, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Wrap them in insulating materials such as foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves.
  • Faucets that connect to pipes in unheated spaces are prone to freezing. Let cold water drip from the faucets served by exposed pipes. Running even a trickle of water through pipes helps prevent them from freezing.
  • Allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing when outside temperatures drop below 32 °F by opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors. Move the products stored in these cabinets up, out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Set the thermostat to the same temperature during the day and at night. Your heating costs may rise, but you’ll prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
  • If you’re leaving home for more than two days, leave the heat on in your home. Set the temperature to no lower than 55 °F. Shut off the water supply and drain pipes and appliances that use water. In addition, have someone you trust check your home once per week.
  • If a pipe bursts, shut off the water supply to your home immediately.

Prevent Ice Dams

Ice dams take form when warm air in the attic heats the roof and melts the snow on the roof. The melted snow collects on unheated eaves and starts freezing, creating ice dams. If you don’t prevent or remove ice dams, the result will be winter water damage to your roof and home.

  • Have your gutters and downspouts cleaned, inspected, and repaired before the snow starts to settle. Doing this ensures that water will flow unobstructed in your drain system.
  • Insulate your attic properly — heat in the home should not reach the attic. Warm air can melt the snow on the roof, which refreezes, forming ice dams. Make sure the attic floor is airtight by sealing any openings.
  • Provide enough ventilation to the attic to keep the roof cool. Warm air should escape through vents near the top of the attic. Cold air should flow in through vents near the eaves. The temperature in the attic should be 5 to 10 °F warmer than the outside temperature.
  • Remove the snow on your roof when it’s about six inches deep. Use a roof rake or a long-handled brush to remove the snow without a ladder.
  • Install a water membrane underneath the roof shingles. It helps prevent water from seeping in.
  • Install a snow shield to prevent leaks. The shield goes under the shingles, starting from the low edge of the roof and extending up at least three feet inside the exterior wall of the house.
  • Install gutter screens to help keep out the debris that causes build-up and damage.

Prevent Spring Thaw Water Damage

Melting snow and ice can enter your home through the roof or foundation when spring arrives. Follow the winter water damage tips below to prevent that from happening.

  • Remove the snow from your roof:
    • Heavy snow on roofs can cause ice dams, which creates structural damage to the roof.
    • Remove the snow from the roof when it’s at least 6 inches deep.
    • If possible, stay on the ground to shovel the snow off the roof. Otherwise, hire a professional.
    • More tips for removing snow from roofs can be found here.
  • Shovel snow away from your home to prevent water from seeping into the foundation.
  • Keep the sewers clear of snow and debris to allow melted snow to flow unobstructed.
  • Check your basement often for water leaks from sewer drains. Make sure the basement floor, walls, windows, and doors are properly sealed.

Other Winter Water Damage Safety Tips

  • Condensation — If you notice condensation on windows, pipes, or walls in your home, dry out the area immediately. Prevent condensation by lowering the humidity in your home or by fixing leaks if there are any.
  • Install water leak detectors anywhere a water problem may occur, such as on sump pumps, near water-bearing fixtures, and behind or beneath pipes.
  • Check water supply lines yearly for leaks. Inspect your hot water heater, washing machine, ice machine in your refrigerator, and other appliances that can leak.
  • Get sewer backup coverage, which is usually not included in your homeowner’s insurance. Heavy rains and melting snow can overload your stormwater system, causing water or sewage to back up into your home.
  • Disconnect outdoor hoses if you aren’t using them. Having your hoses disconnected will prevent water from freezing in the line and creating a blockage that can cause backflow.

PREVENTING FLOOD DAMAGE

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Preventing Flood Preventing Flood

Floods are one of the world's most common and devastating natural disasters, causing extensive loss of property and life. Flood damage can be overwhelming. However, before you even require storm restoration services, make sure to review tips for preventing, or at least limiting, flood damage when you know that flooding is a possibility.

Negative Effects of Flood Damage

  • Swollen house framing
  • Damaged electrical outlets
  • Damaged drywall
  • Mold and mildew growth
  • Damaged furniture
  • Damaged flooring
  • Pest invasions

How to Prevent Flood Damage

  • Elevation – Elevation offers the best protection against flooding. New buildings are expected to be built at or above the level of the area's base flood if they reside in locations with a high flooding risk.
  • Floodwalls – Floodwalls are self-supporting barriers that resemble privacy fences. Their heavy construction keeps them from sliding or falling over. Floodwalls also prohibit water from seeping underneath. Floodwalls can be formed from cement blocks, wood, poured concrete, or bricks, and they can prevent destruction caused by erosion, floating debris, and unequal water pressure on the building’s walls.
  • Stop Sewer Backup – Floodwater can infiltrate sewer systems and back up into buildings. To limit the effects of sewer backups, install a flap valve on the single sewer line.
  • Plastic Sheeting – Plastic sheeting can offer temporary protection from flooding to outside walls. The plastic should be placed on structures that extend from the building so that the weight of the water does not press against the building and nearby landscaping is minimally affected. When using plastic sheeting in a sandbag levee, cover all doors, drains, windows, and other openings to prevent sewer backup.

If flooding does impact your home, a storm restoration contractor can help you navigate the recovery process. Your storm restoration contractor will be able to repair your roof, siding, exterior painting, and fencing as well as replace windows and gutters. If you are in need of storm restoration services, contact SERVPRO North Highlands/ Rio Linda, a reputable Sacramento City storm restoration contractor.

Water Loss - What Category Does Your Loss Fall Under?

3/8/2020 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers from water damage it is important to understanding what type of water you are dealing with. This is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.  There are three types of water.

Gray water (Category 2): Is used to classify slightly contaminated water.  This is when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants begin growing, making the water hazardous.

Black water (Category 3): Is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals, and more.  Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster.  Black water should always be handled by trained professionals. When dealing with black water, it is imperative to wear the proper PPE to insure proper safety practices.

Below are a few tips on handle each water loss category.

If the Water Damage Is from Clean Water (Category 1)

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.

  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

If the Water Damage Is from Contaminated Water (Category 2 or Category 3)

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands  thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
  • Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.

Do You Like Taking Hot Showers and Baths?

7/18/2019 (Permalink)

Make sure you are checking your water heater regularly for Corrosion, Leaking, Rust, and Soot damage.

Feel free to call the experts at SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda at 916-991-1522.

But we would like to help keep your water heater from getting that bad in the first place. Here are some ways to potentially prolong the life of your water heater and keep those shower’s and baths nice and hot.

Ask Yourself These Questions:

  1. Where is Your Water Heater is Located?

Sometimes a water heater is tucked away in a closet in the attic or there is no access to it because of items being stored around it. You want both the water heater and plumbing to it as easy to reach as possible and to clear a path to it.

  1. Is There Space Around Your Water Heater?

First, if your unit starts to leak you will not catch it very quickly if you can’t see it or don’t know where it is. Thus causing worsening damage to your house, this can include hazardous mold.Second, Items to close to the unit can be a fire hazard.Last, a gas-fired unit needs a good supply of oxygen to burn gas. Without sufficient oxygen it could cause damage to the burner chamber, affect how well it is working, and even cause a carbon monoxide leak.

  1. Do You Know What Type of Water Heater You Have?

You should know if your water heater’s a storage or tankless type. If it uses electric, natural gas, or propane.Know the age and gallon capacity.Know the model number, serial number, and brand.

  1. How Do You Turn Off the Water to Your Water Heater?

This is important to know before an emergency situation happens. There should be a gas valve or a disconnect switch within a few feet of the water heater. You should also know where your main gas shut-off valve is. Sometimes turning off the main gas shut-off is safer, like in a gas leak situation. Also make for sure you know where any special tools you may need to shut off the valve are located.

  1. Have You, or Do You Know How to Drain/Flush Your Water Heater?

You should drain a few gallons of water out of your water heater at least once a year. If you notice any sediment or debris, then a flush is recommended. To flush you will need to turn the temperature down and completely drain the tank. Then turn the water back on while the drain is open and let the water flow for a minute or more to help remove any lingering sediment or debris. Once draining is done and water is debris free, refill the tank, and turn the thermostat back to desired setting.

  1. Last, Have You Completed an Annual Water Heater Inspection?

An annual inspection might even be what catches a pesky leak you didn’t know existed.Start with the top of the water heater, is there any leaks, or bad corrosion on the valves and pipes? Check the thermostat and area below the thermostat. Look and see if you notice soot, charred metal, or any black residue. If you have a gas water heater check the draft hood and make sure it is placed properly, with a few inches of air space between the tank and where the vent connects. If you ever smell gas, turn off gas supply immediately and contact a professional. If you have an electric water heater and notice signs of leaking make sure there aren’t any more signs abound the upper and lower panels covering the electrical components.

High Heat is Just Around the Corner, is Your AC an Accident Waiting to Happen?

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Pictured are two examples of condensation lines.

We have quickly moved out of the cold months into Spring. However, unless you are new to Sacramento, you know quite well that the heat of Summer doesn't wait it's turn.

HVAC condensation lines getting clogged is a very large cause of many early Summer water damage claims. While your HVAC unit, and electricity bill, get to rest in the short few weeks between cold and hot a blockage could easily form in your condensation line.

So here is what to do!

  • Call an HVAC company to service your unit. This is probably the easiest and most efficient method, but unfortunately the most expensive.
  • Check to make sure your primary condensation line, usually located near the ground outside the home in an area of high foot traffic, is slowly dripping water when your HVAC is on.
  • If you primary line is not dripping check the secondary line, usually located somewhere like above a window or door as to be more noticeable when dripping.
  • If the primary, or both lines, are not dripping while the unit is on, find a way to flush out or remove the potential blockage. The cleanout will usually be located close to the HVAC main unit. Make sure you thoroughly research how to properly clear your lines before attempting to!
  • Check your HVAC unit overflow pan, make sure it has no holes or rust around it. If it is damaged you may need to have it replaced.

If you believe your HVAC has been leaking then call us ASAP.

SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda will come out and perform a free moisture inspection on your Sacramento property if you believe you may have had a potential accident. Hopefully we turn up nothing on our scope, if we do find something we will get you an estimate or begin communication with your insurance as soon as you need us to.

Concerned about your HVAC leaking, call 916-991-1522 today!

Is Your Sacramento Home At-Risk for Water Heater Failure?

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

Proper checkups and maintenance may save you from this often-overlooked water damage risk.

Water heaters are often overlooked as a sign of extreme failure. Many times, people forget about their water heater at all until they find themselves with cold water. Paying attention to these small signs may save you big before your next water disaster.

Strange Noises and Leaks:

  • Sediment buildup inside of the tank can give rise to these signs
  • Leaks from the header can cause flooding and water damage
  • Any bangs, gurgling, popping, or creaking may indicate something is wrong with your water heater
  • If you can hear water boiling, this is a strong indication that water is being overheated or that pressure is building inside of the tank as a result of a blockage
  • Address these issues immediately to prevent further damage.

Smell and Color:

  • Hot water with a rusty smell, or color can indicate malfunctions
  • Rusty anode rods in the water heater need to be replaced to maintain integrity of the basin
  • Odd smells could also be due to bacteria growth, if the water heater has been off for a period of time

Corroded Pipes:

  • Off color water is a tell-tale sign that something from the water heater to the exit point has corroded
  • Sediments appearing in the water is also a sign that the pipes have degraded over time
  • Have the water heater inspected by an industry professional before taking appropriate steps

Acting on these telltale signs can be a great preventative measure against possible water damage to your Sacramento home or business. For more information on our water damage services, visit our website or call us at (916) 991-1522.

Water Leaks, Not a Flood but Still a Problem

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Proper training and proper tools will SAVE you money, time, and effort

Hidden water damages in your home or business can cause damage directly related to water such as discoloration, structural problems, and rises in your water bill. Small water leaks more often will cause larger secondary issues such as mold and mildew in your home.

As a result of the slow water leak, there is no real noticeable problem for a period of time. As a result of this, areas around the water leak are allowed to become humid and damp, and with this comes mold and mildew growth. Be sure to keep an eye out in your home for signs of minor water damage in your ceilings or walls, perhaps paint separating from the ceiling, sagging in these areas, or water spots.

If you notice any of these issues, or even smell mold and mildew be sure to call for professional help. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is trained and ready to find and fix these issues. When your water event happens, call us at (916) 991-1522 immediately.

Why Water Damage Requires Professional Help

2/22/2018 (Permalink)

Proper training and proper tools will SAVE you money, time, and effort

When a water disaster strikes your home, acting quickly is important. We’ve spoken at length in our blog about the importance of properly taking care of water loss in your home, but there are a few more reasons why the professionals at SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda are important for properly taking care of your home.

In the best case scenario, it is a small water leak coming from a supply line, such as your sink, which means that the water wasn’t contaminated before the loss. Even in this case, there is a large importance to be placed on professional equipment and expertise to take care of the job. 1 house fan won’t get the job done, and neither will 10 house fans. It takes professional equipment, properly managed- a plan in place using trained and professional techniques to take care of the issue.

If you attempt to dry it yourself, you risk taking a much longer time to dry the property. With the humidity in the air from the water loss, this means that you are hugely increasing the likelihood of getting mold. Mold can spread fast as we’ve written about in other blogs, and requires its own set of professional help. Another consideration is that reducing the time it takes to dry a property reduces the damage done. In the case of expanding and contracting wood, stopping the spread of the water loss and removing humidity from the house in critical in preventing further damage.

The worst case is that the source of the water loss was contaminated, whether the source is gray or black water will dictate the severity of the treatment, as well as secondary damages such as odor or extra cleaning that is required.

In all cases, contact SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda for locally owned and operated professional help. We are certified to take care of your water, mold, or fire loss whether it is in a home or business. We are proud to serve our community, and are available 24/7 when your disaster happens. Call us at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for more information about our services.

How We Care for Your Belongings

12/27/2017 (Permalink)

When water damage happens, its not just the structure that needs care

No matter the job, when we enter a property the care of the contents is always taken into account. When it comes to your belongings there are a few considerations we take depending on the severity of the problem. If the property requires extensive cleaning and restoration, a packout is performed in which the items and contents are cataloged, safely stored, and transported into storage. So far as cleaning, there are a few different techniques that are conducted depending on the severity of the damage to the item, and the type of restoration it requires.

  • Dry Cleaning - Lightest type of cleaning
  • Wet Cleaning - For removing residues that require water to help facilitate removal
  • Spray and Wipe - For items that cannot be made too wet
  • Foam Cleaning - For any fabric that cannot be wet cleaned
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Deeper cleaning, where a rough material is used
  • Immersion Cleaning - Items need to be fully submerged to be cleaned properly

For immersion cleaning, we have our ultrasonic cleaning system that aids in the cleaning of all items. If the damage is large enough to require a pack out, your items are safely stored in our facilities. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is locally owned and operated to serve our community; and that means you! Call us 24/7 if disaster has struck, (916) 991-1522.

Different Types of Water Damage and The Approach We Take

10/20/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage requires a different approach for each material it affects

When trying to combat water damage, it is important to remember that water has a distinct advantage. The main avenue we can take to dry water damage relies on having lots of access to the area that needs to be dried. This might mean modifying the space temporarily to access hidden areas, but for some materials that is not an option.

The key to proper drying is proper access. When it comes to walls that are made out of a stone, cement, or brick it can be very difficult to get the access that is required. When it comes to masonry walls, the drying is largely affected by its ability to evaporate on both sides on the wall. When it comes to the outside of the wall, this can either benefit or negate drying as the weather outside will affect the drying process. For this, the removal of finishes with low permeability may be done to help with the drying process.

No matter the case, SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is trained and certified to help Sacramento with its flood damage repair and restoration needs. When your disaster happens, be sure to call SERVPRO and (916) 991-1522.

What to Do When Your Device Falls in Water

7/7/2017 (Permalink)

If you act fast, it may not be too late.

It’s something that will eventually happen to all of us, but with proper care you might be able to reverse your mistake.

Water itself isn’t conductive, but any water that isn’t specifically deionized will have minerals in it that will make it conductive. When water gets into your device, it will create a pathway between two points where electricity shouldn’t flow, creating a short.

  1. Get your device out of the water as fast as possible. Don’t put yourself in danger to do so, but grab it as soon as the mistakes been made. The longer your phone is in water, it becomes increasingly more likely that water will seep into your phone. This includes water resistant phones as well, water resistance doesn’t not mean waterproof and they are prone to allowing water inside of them under pressure as well.
  2. Turn your device off. This is the best way to ensure that a short does not occur if water is inside of the device.
  3. Dry device phone off as best as you can externally, but don’t use blow dryers. Blow dryers can heat the device and damage components. If you have silica packets or rice around, leave your phone in a container with them to allow the water to be wicked away.
  4. Wait a few days, water can be difficult to leave a phone and the rice or silica will need time to work.
  5. Turn it on to test. You may be in luck! Most phones, even if they still work, will always show that they have been water damaged with indicators that change color when this occurs.

For all of your other water damage needs, call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda 24/7 at 916-991-1522, or visit our website for more information about water, mold, and fire damage.

What to Do After a Flood or Water Loss

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

  1. Firstly, if you are dealing with any sort of sewage or contaminated water avoid ALL contact and wash your hands thoroughly after in contact with contaminated items.
  2. Shut off the water source if you can, or contact a qualified party to do so.
  3. Turn off electricity for the relevant parts of the building via the circuit breaker to prevent shortages, damage, and fire.
  4. Mop the area to remove excess water when possible.
  5. Do a soft pass over wooden furniture to dry them and prevent damage.
  6. Remove upholstered materials from wet areas to prevent further damage and start drying.
  7. Place wood or aluminum foil between furniture and wet carpeting to prevent spread of water upwards.
  8. Remove all moisture sensitive objects such as electronics, art, paperwork, or other important objects.

Types of Water Contamination

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO cleans sewage backups, too! Here is what qualifies for each category of contaminated water.

Sewer backups ARE an emergency. Water from these systems may contain many bacteria, microbes, or viruses. It is important to get the qualified help you need to tackle these issues safely with the proper equipment. There are three classifications for water contamination, and when working with SERVPRO we properly classify these types in order to provide you with the service that you need.

Clean Water: This is most commonly found from a clean source of water, such as a leaky faucet, water main, or supply line. Water damage is water damage, so even though this water is drinkable water, it still does damage to your home and needs to be taken care of accordingly.

Gray Water: This is “relatively clean” water that has been used in some capacity by a washing machine, shower, or sink. This category includes water with some urine but no feces, from a toilet overflow. This water can still contain bacteria or viruses, and can quickly turn into “category 3: black water” if untreated. Contact with this type of water should be avoided.

If you have a clean water, gray water, or black water loss event, call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda to get professional help with your water restoration needs. (916)-991-1522, or visit our website.
