Your Business Should Never Suffer Due to Bad Scheduling

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial Your Business Should Never Suffer Due to Bad Scheduling We set up a way for this local skating rink to continue their normal operations throughout this water loss through barriers and careful scheduling.

When disaster strikes your Sacramento business, you can’t afford to just “shut down” until it is taken care of.

Here at SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda we know what it is like to run a business, and that every second wasted is lost profit.

While everyone is concerned about getting the job done fast, we also take great care in planning what order things need to get done. Let’s say a pipe in the attic of your business bursts, if you need to run your fax machine to enable your profits and an I.T. isn’t scheduled to be onsite to evaluate your machine until after the drying is complete, that is pure loss of profit. That is why with your commercial property the most important factor of our work is tackling every obstacle with proper organization. If we can set up temp offices in an unaffected area but that was the only fax machine, then drying is not the highest concern at this time. Our highest concern will always be your bottom dollar.

Through constant communication and intelligent scheduling we will work with you to plan the quickest and most efficient way for you to get back on track as soon as humanly possible. After all, if you run a company you need income to stay afloat, so any problem that is not a direct opposition to income can wait its turn.

Does your business need a job done not only fast, but right? Then call us today at 916-991-1522!

High Heat is Just Around the Corner, is Your AC an Accident Waiting to Happen?

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage High Heat is Just Around the Corner, is Your AC an Accident Waiting to Happen? Pictured are two examples of condensation lines.

We have quickly moved out of the cold months into Spring. However, unless you are new to Sacramento, you know quite well that the heat of Summer doesn't wait it's turn.

HVAC condensation lines getting clogged is a very large cause of many early Summer water damage claims. While your HVAC unit, and electricity bill, get to rest in the short few weeks between cold and hot a blockage could easily form in your condensation line.

So here is what to do!

  • Call an HVAC company to service your unit. This is probably the easiest and most efficient method, but unfortunately the most expensive.
  • Check to make sure your primary condensation line, usually located near the ground outside the home in an area of high foot traffic, is slowly dripping water when your HVAC is on.
  • If you primary line is not dripping check the secondary line, usually located somewhere like above a window or door as to be more noticeable when dripping.
  • If the primary, or both lines, are not dripping while the unit is on, find a way to flush out or remove the potential blockage. The cleanout will usually be located close to the HVAC main unit. Make sure you thoroughly research how to properly clear your lines before attempting to!
  • Check your HVAC unit overflow pan, make sure it has no holes or rust around it. If it is damaged you may need to have it replaced.

If you believe your HVAC has been leaking then call us ASAP.

SERVPRO of North Highlands / Rio Linda will come out and perform a free moisture inspection on your Sacramento property if you believe you may have had a potential accident. Hopefully we turn up nothing on our scope, if we do find something we will get you an estimate or begin communication with your insurance as soon as you need us to.

Concerned about your HVAC leaking, call 916-991-1522 today!

What is a Storm?

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Damage What is a Storm? An eerily beautiful wildfire photo. Hopefully this can stand as a metaphor, that even in disaster we can move on to something beautiful.

As time has gone on the way SERVPRO defines a storm has evolved.

Originally STORM was used as a rallying call to all SERVPROs to help in areas where more than just the local franchises were needed to help everyone that was affected. These events included massive rainstorms, hurricanes, and flash floods.

However, those aren't the only natural disasters that happen in our world.

This massive network of hundreds of franchises willing to travel became a saving grace to those affected by all kinds of catastrophic events. Wildfires, sudden widespread freezing temperatures, even earthquakes suddenly became part of this movement.

That is STORM to SERVPRO it is the first name we gave it and it is the name that stuck.

In every disaster there is overwhelming emotions. We have to try our best to smile through the worst and work toward better days together. All in all we must never lose our hope, even in the most trying of times.

With the recent wildfires that have caused havoc throughout California it is easy to get caught up in all the pain and hardship, but we have to work together to lift emotions. Smile even though it hurts, focus on the positives of the future instead of dwelling on the negatives of the past, if you need help don't be afraid to tell someone, and never lose your hope.

This goes out to all of the families that have been affected by the California wildfires. You have the strength to get through this, believe in yourselves, your family, and your friends.

Importance of Carbon Monoxide Alarms.

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Importance of Carbon Monoxide Alarms. All homes and commercial properties should have CO alarms to keep your family and friends safe.

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather storms, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:

Never use a generator, grill or camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.

To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.

Opening doors or windows and using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen and has no scent, it is very dangerous and can rapidly lead to loss of consciousness and death.

Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.

Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

If your home or business suffers from any type of storm damage, call SERVPRO of North Highlands/Rio Linda at 916-991-1522 and we will send a professional out to assist with making your home safe for you and your family.

The Mold Remediation Process

Mold Remediation The Mold Remediation Process Before and After a Mold Remediation.

  1. Contact Us  at 916-991-1522 The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel to best suit your needs.

  2. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

  3. Mold Containment Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold spores. We may use advanced containment procedures to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and HVAC systems must be turned off to prevent the spread of spores throughout the home.

  4. Air Filtration Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these spores during the mold remediation process.

  5. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use anti fungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting.

  6. Cleaning Contents and Belongings We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and all restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

  7. Restoration Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

If you want to enjoy the celebrations without the risks of fire, go to a professional show. Professional shows are big, fun, and most importantly- safe.

If you still can’t resist having your own firework celebration, here is a list of the recommended safety precautions from the National Council on Firework Safety.

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.  Save your alcohol for after the show.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.

Different Causes of Commercial Water Damage

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Different Causes of Commercial Water Damage SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda provides business owners with commercial water damage restoration services

Most businesses have a source of water in their building. For some, this may be crucial, others it may be secondary. Whether it's water for a client such as food preparation, or services such as dentistry or cleaning, all water sources are at risk for leaks or breakage. Failures in these systems, high pressure or not, can and will lead to water damage in your commercial business. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is here to help Sacramento businesses with their water damage based issues.

There are a multitude of ways to receive water damage, but the best way to solve this issue is to allow trained professionals to assess the damage and act accordingly. Our North Highlands and Rio Linda SERVPRO technicians are prepared and IICRC certified to tackle water damage due to flooding, toilet overflows, sewer backups, pipe breakages, and more. Even clean water needs to be removed professionally to prevent further damage. Dirty water from sewage, drains, or floods especially needs expert care and removal to prevent the spread of pathogens that may exist in these conditions.

Damage will often be visible, but can just as well not be readily apparent to you. When it comes to bacteria and pathogens, this is especially critical as uncleaned areas from these issues can and will spread. Furthermore, water can spread into materials, damage, warp, and ultimately permanently change them.

An important part of the drying process for the quickest cleaning, is the pack-away of items off-site. This provides security from damage during the cleaning and repairing process and also protects against theft of supplies and inventory. SERVPRO is here to help.

If you face water damage, commercial or otherwise in sacramento: call us at (916) 991-1522. We are available 24/7 to help with get your business back on track. For more information on commercial services, visit our website.

Is Your Sacramento Home At-Risk for Water Heater Failure?

6/6/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Is Your Sacramento Home At-Risk for Water Heater Failure? Proper checkups and maintenance may save you from this often-overlooked water damage risk.

Water heaters are often overlooked as a sign of extreme failure. Many times, people forget about their water heater at all until they find themselves with cold water. Paying attention to these small signs may save you big before your next water disaster.

Strange Noises and Leaks:

  • Sediment buildup inside of the tank can give rise to these signs
  • Leaks from the header can cause flooding and water damage
  • Any bangs, gurgling, popping, or creaking may indicate something is wrong with your water heater
  • If you can hear water boiling, this is a strong indication that water is being overheated or that pressure is building inside of the tank as a result of a blockage
  • Address these issues immediately to prevent further damage.

Smell and Color:

  • Hot water with a rusty smell, or color can indicate malfunctions
  • Rusty anode rods in the water heater need to be replaced to maintain integrity of the basin
  • Odd smells could also be due to bacteria growth, if the water heater has been off for a period of time

Corroded Pipes:

  • Off color water is a tell-tale sign that something from the water heater to the exit point has corroded
  • Sediments appearing in the water is also a sign that the pipes have degraded over time
  • Have the water heater inspected by an industry professional before taking appropriate steps

Acting on these telltale signs can be a great preventative measure against possible water damage to your Sacramento home or business. For more information on our water damage services, visit our website or call us at (916) 991-1522.

Preparing for Bad Weather

5/28/2018 (Permalink)

Regardless of the season, bad weather can strike at anytime. What bad weather is might change person to person, but it is smart to prepare for difficult weather in advance. Stockpiling a few items and preparing an emergency kit will help you stay safe. Here are a few items you can throw together for your home emergency kit.

A battery operated weather radio will allow you to stay up to date with information, even when the power goes out. Having extra batteries for this, and your other devices can allow you to continue to have flashlights and communication during power outages.
When living in areas that can be cold, a small generator on hand is smart. If the power goes out, and you need to produce heat, the generator will put you on the safe side of this situation. Its also smart to purchase generators in off seasons, such as late spring, summer, or fall when they are cheaper and not in demand.

Bad weather doesn’t always come when you're at home, so prepare your car for these situations as well. Make that next trip to Tahoe this summer just that much safer!

Having a few extra non-expirable food items for these situations can be a pertinent decision as well. Bottled water is a must, but some other common items to buy include granola bars, soups, dry milk, and anything that comes in a can.

If the next big storm in Sacramento causes damage to your property, be sure to call SERVPRO of Rio Linda and North Highlands to help you make it “Like It Never Even Happened”. Call us at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for more information.

Mold spores are constantly floating around just about everywhere. As a result of this, and given the right conditions, mold may show up in your home or business at any time. Even if you maintain a general level of cleanliness around your property, mold will still find the conditions it needs to survive and spread.

Bathroom

  • Anywhere there is moisture, mold can be present
  • Check your shower, this means grout, any products, small spaces, or above the shower area
  • Under your sink, you may not notice that a pipe has started to leak creating a perfect environment for mold
  • Leaking in your shower or bathtub may also go unnoticed and cause mold to grow beneath these items

Living Room

  • Check for mold under carpets, spilled drinks or food can offer mold a prime place for growth
  • Window seals, water may become trapped and give mold an ideal environment for growth
  • Brickwork, an exposed chimney or other brickwork can allow moisture to be trapped in between bricks, giving rise to mold growth

Kitchen

  • Your fridge may be hiding mold under, or behind it
  • Garbage can will often have moisture and plenty of food for mold to thrive on, check the container and lid for mold growth

After checking these places, if you still suspect mold growth, call SERVPRO of Rio Linda and North Highlands to have professionals inspect your home. Call us at (916) 991-1522 or visit our website for more information.

Sacramento Campfire Safety Tips for Camping Season 2017

Fire Damage Sacramento Campfire Safety Tips for Camping Season 2017 Tips to stay safe this camping season, from SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda

Even though we aren’t in a drought, it still the dry season. It is always important to stay safe no matter the conditions when making a fire, for your safety and the safety of others. Here are some safety tips on how to pick a spot, prepare your fire, and extinguish it properly.

How to Pick a Campfire Spot

  1. DO NOT build a campfire if the campground, area or event rules prohibit them.
  2. DO NOT build a campfire in hazardous, dry conditions.
  3. Find Out if the campground has an existing fire ring or fire pit.
  4. If there is not an existing fire pit, and pits are allowed, choose a site at least 15 feet from tent walls, shrubs, trees or other flammable objects. Beware of low-hanging branches.
  5. Choose an open, level location away from fuels such as logs, brush or decaying leaves.
  6. Take wind, and its direction, into account when choosing the site. Choose a spot that’s protected from gusts.

How to Prepare your Campfire Pit

  1. Clear a 10-foot-diameter area around the site. Remove any grass, twigs, leaves and firewood.
  2. Dig a pit in the dirt, about a foot deep.
  3. Circle the pit with rocks.

How to Build Your Campfire

  1. Make sure you have a source of water, a bucket and shovel nearby at all times.
  2. Gather three types of wood from the ground always. Never cut whole trees or branches, dead or alive. Live or fresh materials won’t burn, and you’ll be damaging the forest. Dead standing trees often are homes for birds and other wildlife.
    1. Tinder: Small twigs and dry leaves grass and needles.
    2. Kindling: Sticks smaller than 1″ around.
    3. Fuel: Larger pieces of wood. Keep these stacked upwind, away from the fire.
  3. Loosely pile a few handfuls of tinder in the center of the fire pit.
  4. Ignite the tinder with a match or lighter.
  5. Wait until the match is cold, and discard it into the fire.
  6. Add kindling and fuel, the larger firewood, as it grows and to keep it going.
  7. Keep the fire small and under control.

How to Extinguish your Campfire

  1. Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible.
  2. Pour plenty of water on the fire. Drown ALL material, not just the visibly red material. Pour until hissing sounds stop.
  3. If you do not have water, stir dirt or sand into the embers with a shovel to bury the fire.
  4. With your shovel, scrape any remaining sticks and logs to remove any embers. Make sure that no embers are exposed and still smoldering.
  5. Continue adding water, dirt or sand and stirring with a shovel until all material is cool.
  6. Remember: If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave. Pack it in, Pack it out. It is your responsibility to pack out everything that you packed in, including any trash.

Commercial At-Risk Types of Businesses for Commercial Mold Damage in Sacramento SERVPRO Can Remediate Mold Infestations in All Kinds of Businesses

Moisture in homes can allow for many types of mold. Molds are highly adaptable and can grow in many environments and conditions. The most common threads between mold are moisture, darkness, plentiful food sources, and moderate temperatures. Different businesses and different types will have varying environments for this mold to grow, meaning that your commercial property may be more or less susceptible to mold depending on the business. Below is a list of a few of the types of businesses that are most susceptible, though we receive calls from all types of businesses with mold issues.

Industrial Settings - Some settings with moist environments can be excellent for mold growth. Commercial areas often with unused areas, lots of corners, and neglected space are perfect places for mold growth. Industrial workers also have a tendency to ignore mold growth under the assumption that it is a mess from another part of the job.

Apartments, Rental Properties, and Hotels - Mold tends to want to live where we want to live given the moderate temperatures we keep ourselves. As a result of this, landlords and hotel owners are some of the most afflicted business owners when it comes to mold, especially when spaces are inhabited frequently and for short periods of time. Renters can contribute to mold growth without knowing, and with their short stay may not notice it while they are there. Regular checkups are essential in the fight against long term mold growth.

Restaurants - Food service is the most common business for mold damage in Sacramento. With food preparation, there is an ample source of nutrients, plenty of water, and a humid working environment. Unnoticed scraps of food can fall, or find itself out of sight where mold can grow and spread.

SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda offers professional damage restoration and cleaning services, with the training needed for even the toughest commercial jobs. Call us at (916) 991-1522, or view our mold services here

Sacramento Flood Damage - Facts about Flood Damage in Sacramento

4/8/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Sacramento Flood Damage - Facts about Flood Damage in Sacramento SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda here to give you facts about flood damage in Sacramento

Everyone resides in a flood zone. Even dry areas can experience flash floods, especially after a drought with heavy rainfall. Rivers, streams, and lakes can overflow with a few extra rainy days.

A few inches of water can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your Sacramento home. Flood damage can also affect your Sacramento commercial building. It is possible that your insurance plan does not cover flood damage because you may not be an immediate risk to this common type of home damage.

Here are some facts and prevention tips about flood damage:

  • Flood damage, on average, can cost around $5,000 to $10,000. How much damage, and the cost to repair that depends on what type of water affected your property, and how much water there was.
  • Having a plumber inspect and flush your water heater at least once a year is a recommended way to prevent failure, and subsequent flooding of water from that container.
  • Survey your house, inspect, and replace rubber hoses that are old, worn, or may become faulty. Metal or braided hoses will not go hard and burst like rubber, and continue to check all hoses.
  • Toilet leaks will appear as a small leakage from the base of the toilet, check for these to see if this needs to be repaired.
  • When moving into a new apartment, space, or business, locate the main water shutoff. If something bursts, you need to know where this is quickly to be able to prevent further damage.
  • Always keep your eye out for unwanted moisture, or signs of water damage on your walls or ceilings.
  • Often leaks or breaks in plumbing happen where pipes can’t be seen. If you suspect a leak, turn off all water usage. Then, check your water meter, wait an hour, and check again. If you have used any more water, you will know you have a leak.
  • Furthermore, if you have a spike in your water bill you may have a leak. Keep an eye on these to make sure you are properly informed about your Sacramento home or business.

If or when you experience flood damage in your Sacramento home, call SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for storm or water damage information.

Water Leaks, Not a Flood but Still a Problem

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Leaks, Not a Flood but Still a Problem Proper training and proper tools will SAVE you money, time, and effort

Hidden water damages in your home or business can cause damage directly related to water such as discoloration, structural problems, and rises in your water bill. Small water leaks more often will cause larger secondary issues such as mold and mildew in your home.

As a result of the slow water leak, there is no real noticeable problem for a period of time. As a result of this, areas around the water leak are allowed to become humid and damp, and with this comes mold and mildew growth. Be sure to keep an eye out in your home for signs of minor water damage in your ceilings or walls, perhaps paint separating from the ceiling, sagging in these areas, or water spots.

If you notice any of these issues, or even smell mold and mildew be sure to call for professional help. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is trained and ready to find and fix these issues. When your water event happens, call us at (916) 991-1522 immediately.

Wet Leaves Will Cause Mold in Sacramento, “The City of Trees”

3/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Wet Leaves Will Cause Mold in Sacramento, “The City of Trees” Wet leaves on the ground can make for the perfect conditions for mold growth this fall in Sacramento

Mold is a natural and healthy part of leaf decomposition. In some aspects, leaf mold is even wanted for compost and gardening for its properties when mixed with the soil. However, when leaves are left outside to decompose on your sidewalk and yard, you can end up tracking excess mold into your house.

This fall the City of Trees will drop its leaves, and the streets of sidewalks of Sacramento will be covered. Street cleaning programs aside, when it comes to your property you are responsible for taking care of the leaves. When left on the ground, the leaves will begin decomposing and between the moderate climate of Sacramento and the naturally wet habitat of these leaves, they will produce mold. To drive down the amount of mold spores in the air, on your pets and family, and ultimately in your house, it is important that you pick up the leaves and put them in your compost, the street if there is weekly leaf collection, or in your yard waste bin.

Why Water Damage Requires Professional Help

2/22/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Why Water Damage Requires Professional Help Proper training and proper tools will SAVE you money, time, and effort

When a water disaster strikes your home, acting quickly is important. We’ve spoken at length in our blog about the importance of properly taking care of water loss in your home, but there are a few more reasons why the professionals at SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda are important for properly taking care of your home.

In the best case scenario, it is a small water leak coming from a supply line, such as your sink, which means that the water wasn’t contaminated before the loss. Even in this case, there is a large importance to be placed on professional equipment and expertise to take care of the job. 1 house fan won’t get the job done, and neither will 10 house fans. It takes professional equipment, properly managed- a plan in place using trained and professional techniques to take care of the issue.

If you attempt to dry it yourself, you risk taking a much longer time to dry the property. With the humidity in the air from the water loss, this means that you are hugely increasing the likelihood of getting mold. Mold can spread fast as we’ve written about in other blogs, and requires its own set of professional help. Another consideration is that reducing the time it takes to dry a property reduces the damage done. In the case of expanding and contracting wood, stopping the spread of the water loss and removing humidity from the house in critical in preventing further damage.

The worst case is that the source of the water loss was contaminated, whether the source is gray or black water will dictate the severity of the treatment, as well as secondary damages such as odor or extra cleaning that is required.

In all cases, contact SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda for locally owned and operated professional help. We are certified to take care of your water, mold, or fire loss whether it is in a home or business. We are proud to serve our community, and are available 24/7 when your disaster happens. Sacramento’s Storms This Winter: Sump Pumps & Flood Prevention

2/3/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Sacramento’s Storms This Winter: Sump Pumps & Flood Prevention A flood isn’t necessarily a monsoon, water can seep into your basement and you need to prevent it

A roof leak, or a growing pool of water outside due to a blocked drain may seem like the most common types of flooding. Most houses with basements have sump pumps, and it is important to keep these pumps clear of debris in order to prevent flooding due to water in the basement. The danger in a flooded basement lies in the uses we have for it, often we use it for storing old family heirlooms or tools which can be quickly ruined by water.

Sump pump maintenance should be done at least annually to make sure that it will perform properly when the next larger than average storm hits. Testing it with water, cleaning any filtration, and emptying the pit of debris are all good ways to keep it operating properly.

When the next disaster strikes your Sacramento home, be sure to call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda. We are ready and able to professionally restore and repair your water loss event. Call us 24/7 for your emergency at (916) 991-1522.

Air Duct Mold - an Important Consideration

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

We have talked in excess about the different surfaces mold can grow on, and the implications of mold growth. This continue, however, into places that are even less seen and can have much larger implications. Mold grows under the right conditions on almost any surface. This includes humidity, temperature, and a source of food. Depending on the time of year, your air ducts can provide all three of those conditions perfectly.

Secondly is transport, mold spores are too small to control, and constantly floating in air. When mold growth occurs, the amount of spores in the air spikes as a result of the growth, making the propensity for it to grow further very likely. When it comes to transportation, these spores are very likely to make it past the air filter on the intakes of your HVAC system, and as a result get transported to the rest of your property.

With this in mind, if you feel as if you can ‘smell’ the mold in your house but cannot find it, you need to contact a professional immediately. Mold grows extremely quickly, and spreads just as fast. “Black mold” and similar hooks are used to entice you into needing testing to determine if it is harmful. All types and colors of mold can be harmful, and regardless of if it is tested harmful by a company, it should be handled in the same way as the problem will persist without proper care.

SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda have the certified professionals you need to take care of mold. Call us at (916) 991-1522. Locally owned and operated water, fire, and mold damage restoration service for Sacramento. Take a look at our work with mold in our before & after photos, and get an inside look at how we will handle your mold remediation.

Dust, Mold, and Electricity Bills: Clean Your Ducts

1/5/2018 (Permalink)

When it to the cleanliness of your office, the cleanliness of the air is an important consideration. If your ducts are collecting and possibly spreading dusty and dirty air around your office, the office itself will get dustier. Ducts can be the most unsanitary part of a building, regular cleaning of ducts is part of proper building maintenance.

Alongside dust, the other main consideration for duct dirt and grime is possible mold growth. A duct can be a cool, and damp place where mold growth will flourish. With the proper food and temperature, mold will grow anywhere. If it is growing in your ducts, this can lead to the quick spreading of spores throughout your property.

As a benefit to cleaning the ducts, you can count on some increased efficiency too. Ducts and HVAC systems are designed with the ductwork in mind, if there are blockages and materials that cause lack of efficiency, this will be reflected in your power bill. But conducting proper maintenance, you can prevent that loss.

Your locally owned and operated SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is here for you, call us at (916) 991-1522 for your next commercial air duct cleaning.

How We Care for Your Belongings

Water Damage How We Care for Your Belongings When water damage happens, its not just the structure that needs care

No matter the job, when we enter a property the care of the contents is always taken into account. When it comes to your belongings there are a few considerations we take depending on the severity of the problem. If the property requires extensive cleaning and restoration, a packout is performed in which the items and contents are cataloged, safely stored, and transported into storage. So far as cleaning, there are a few different techniques that are conducted depending on the severity of the damage to the item, and the type of restoration it requires.

  • Dry Cleaning - Lightest type of cleaning
  • Wet Cleaning - For removing residues that require water to help facilitate removal
  • Spray and Wipe - For items that cannot be made too wet
  • Foam Cleaning - For any fabric that cannot be wet cleaned
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Deeper cleaning, where a rough material is used
  • Immersion Cleaning - Items need to be fully submerged to be cleaned properly

For immersion cleaning, we have our ultrasonic cleaning system that aids in the cleaning of all items. If the damage is large enough to require a pack out, your items are safely stored in our facilities. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is locally owned and operated to serve our community; and that means you! Call us 24/7 if disaster has struck, (916) 991-1522.

Stay Dry, Sacramento!

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Even though rain can be pretty exciting, its important to understand all weather comes with its own safety concerns. A few misconceptions to clear up, and a few tips to help you stay dry this winter.

  1. Don’t use candles when the power goes out - as fun as it might be, candles used in place of lights are actually poor light sources, and a simply made fire hazard
  2. Have a safety kit, which you can read more about in our other blog posts
  3. If there is thunder, stay in doors - Lightning is not as rare as you think, and this is only a rule of thumb for other possible dangers
  4. Keep your refrigerator closed when the powers out - The longer your food stays refrigerated, the longer you can stay indoors.
  5. Notify the power company exactly when the power goes out - The power company may not yet know that there is a service issue, and can get on the problem as soon as possible
  6. Stay as far away from power lines as possible - This includes powerlines that have been downed, and powerlines that are in contact with trees. If something happens during a storm, contact the service provider.

We hope you stay dry, and flood free in Sacramento this winter. Feel free to call us at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for information on our services.

Mold Mysteries

12/9/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold Mysteries Mold spores are too small to contain

There are a lot of… ‘alternative facts’... surrounding mold, but we have the right information to keep your house mold free, and your family safe

‘Black mold’ might be the most overused and misunderstood phrase of our industry. Mold in general is a largely misunderstood issue. The issue with mold, is that it likes environments that we largely like, and as a result will grow where we want to be, or in environments we make. There are molds with harmful effects, and regardless of its potential to cause harm all mold should be treated the same, and treated by professionals. Here are some facts about mold to counter some of the mythology surrounding it.

Your basement has never flooded, and it doesn’t really matter anyway.

We’ve spoken previously about the importance of proper basement maintenance. Beyond this, the basement is a leading source of mold for a few reasons. Firstly, it is easily forgotten. Secondly, cardboard boxes storing materials, and materials within those boxes are likely targets for mold growth with the damp and cool atmosphere.

Using bleach to kill mold

Bleach may be a powerful disinfectant, and do well at killing bacteria: but it is not a good avenue for mold removal. Mold grows roots within materials it is growing on, and bleach will not penetrate those materials. Water from the bleach solution can penetrate, and leave the material with water for further mold growth.

A Clean and odor free home is mold free

Visible dirt has almost nothing to do with mold growth, mold will most likely grow in least trafficked places, and where you least expect it. In the same vein, even though mold produces an odor that is often musty, just because you do not smell this odor does not mean your home is mold free. Not all mold produces odor, and if it does produce an odor, it is not necessarily in an area with airflow that would allow you to smell it.

We have the training and experience you need to help you with your mold problem. Call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda at (916) 991-1522 24/7 today.

Stay Warm Sacramento, but Stay Safe

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

Space heaters can be a cost effective way to heat small spaces, but with simple designs can often be a fire hazard.

Heating (or cooling) houses is an inefficient way of staying warm. Unless someone is in each room of the house at any given time, you are ultimately heating space that no person is occupying. The best way to save money is to then heat only one room you are currently in, or with some space heaters that are directional, have heat flowing directly towards you to keep yourself warm.

With this in mind, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), space heaters account for 30% of all home fires, and 4 out of 5 deaths where the fire was caused by home heating. Below are some tips to help you stay safe, while staying warm this winter in Sacramento.

Safety:

  1. Keep a safe distance of about 3 feet between anything and the space heater. This especially includes bedding, curtains, and furniture.
  2. Keep kids away from it, as they may not be as aware of their ability to catch fire or burn them as you are.
  3. Do not plug space heaters into extension cords, and do not step on their cords.
  4. Turn them off before going to sleep, leaving a room, or leaving them unattended.
  5. Have smoke and carbon monoxide monitors to detect possible fires.
  6. Only use space heaters that are “UL Listed” which means they have been independently tested for safety.
  7. Do not use any sort of burning space heaters indoors, only use electric heaters that do not produce fumes when functioning properly.

Space heaters, although ideally efficient, actually will cost more in the long run to heat your home. It is much more important to have your home properly insulated and to use a conventional central heat pump type system than to just try use a space heater for an extended period of time. If you must, make sure you do it safely. If anything should happen, call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda 24/7 for fire damage restoration at (916) 991-1522.

Lightning Safety for the Next Sacramento Storm

11/8/2017 (Permalink)

For your safety, it is important to have a plan and be ready to make changes to your day when there are conditions for lightning. If there is a thunderstorm in your area, there is no safe place outside. Lightning is fairly rare compared to the amount of people in a given area but that does not relieve the danger. If you can hear thunder, no matter the distance lightning is close enough to possibly strike you. It is important that if you hear this thunder, you get to shelter.

Once inside, it is important to stay off of corded electrical devices that are plugged into the wall. It is also important to avoid plumbing and things that are interconnected via metal such as baths and faucets. It is also a good idea to not be on concrete surfaces.

From your friends at SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda, stay safe Sacramento. When a storm hits, be sure to check for leaks and water damage. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is always here to help, with 24/7 support please call (916) 991-1522.

Water damage requires a different approach for each material it affects

When trying to combat water damage, it is important to remember that water has a distinct advantage. The main avenue we can take to dry water damage relies on having lots of access to the area that needs to be dried. This might mean modifying the space temporarily to access hidden areas, but for some materials that is not an option.

The key to proper drying is proper access. When it comes to walls that are made out of a stone, cement, or brick it can be very difficult to get the access that is required. When it comes to masonry walls, the drying is largely affected by its ability to evaporate on both sides on the wall. When it comes to the outside of the wall, this can either benefit or negate drying as the weather outside will affect the drying process. For this, the removal of finishes with low permeability may be done to help with the drying process.

No matter the case, SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is trained and certified to help Sacramento with its flood damage repair and restoration needs. When your disaster happens, be sure to call SERVPRO and (916) 991-1522.

Mold is Not a Surface Level Problem

10/15/2017 (Permalink)

Mold grows roots over time, as a result of its food source and growth it can damage the structural integrity of your home

We’ve spoken extensively on our blog about the sources of mold, where it likes to grow, and the speed at which it grows. You can also find information about the health effects of mold, as well as the main misconceptions about mold. In addition to this, it is important to note that when left for long periods of time mold can gradually destroy the surfaces they grow on.

Mold growth is usually a sign of unacceptable levels of humidity within the house, giving rise to the environment that mold thrives in. In addition to mold, an excess of humidity can itself cause structural damage to your home and its contents as drywall begins to deteriorate, wood begins to rot, and wallpapers can peel. The conditions for mold growth involve humidity, correct temperatures, and a food sources. In the case of mold on surfaces in your house, the surface is the food source. As the mold grows off of your drywall, brick, grout, or wooden beams it is slowly deteriorating that object.

Mold can never be truly removed from a home due to the size of mold spores, and their resistance to elimination. Mold spores already exist in every home as they float freely through the air, making the best way of prevention preventing humidity.

When it comes to mold, our trained technicians are ready to determine the extent of mold damage, where it is growing, and remediate the issue. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda are also ready to find the source of any leaks, and other sources of water damage that may be giving rise to the increases in humidity. Call us 24/7 at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for more information. As a locally owned company in your community, we are here to make your mold problem “Like it never even happened”.

Sacramento Basement Water Damage, Flooding and the Struggle Against Time

10/6/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Sacramento Basement Water Damage, Flooding and the Struggle Against Time Don't leave your basement out of site and out of mind. When a storm hits Sacramento this winter, be sure to take care of water damage immediately.

Your basement may seem unimportant compared to the rest of your house, it is as important to keep dry as the rest of your home

Homeowners often find themselves with excess in their basement, from general seepage, if their sump pump has stopped working, or if there is standing water due to another issue. When there is no risk of the water falling to a lower floor, damaging their floors or walls, and is only sitting on cement they often feel as if the problem should not be immediately handled. The unfortunate reality is that homes, are contained structures, and it is inadvisable to have an excess of water sitting for any period of time as it can create one of a few problems.

Even though the water in the basement may not be immediately touching surfaces that traditionally will grow mold as a food source such as wood or cardboard, it will still grow mold as a result of the water. Standing water in the basement will cause moisture to enter the air, which will spread throughout the house and cause secondary mold damage elsewhere. As well, if the water is touching any wood the capillary effect will cause water to be wicked upwards, possibly causing water damage above the basement.

Full mitigation of this issue requires treatment as if it were any other part of your house. After calling SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda, our first step would be to remove the water immediately, and then begin the drying process.

If you’ve delayed taking care of a flooded basement, be sure to call us at (916) 991-1522 to prevent further damage, or secondary damage to your house. Locally owned and operated, we are trained and certified to help you with your water damage situation.

Smoke Alarms: A Necessary Annoyance

9/27/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Smoke Alarms: A Necessary Annoyance Stay safe Sacramento, with proper fire alarm maintenance.

Every house has them, not all houses have them on. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, about half of all fires (house, or business) had deactivated smoke alarms, disconnected smoke alarms, or smoke alarms without batteries. This can often happen in rental properties, where the residents do not necessarily know how to replace their smoke alarm’s batteries, or do not care. Regardless of the situation or how annoying the little ‘chirp’ from the smoke alarm can be, it is important that you properly protect your smoke alarms.

There are plenty of resources online for properly maintaining the specific smoke alarm you have, if you need more help you can contact an electrician, American Red Cross, or local fire department. Alarms, in addition to maintaining power, should be tested monthly with the test button.

Be sure to visit our other blog posts on fire safety, as well as contact SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda when your disaster happens.

Contamination Hazards in Flood Water

9/13/2017 (Permalink)

Flood water may be a result of rain, but this need to be treated as black water.

The cause of your flood, whether it is the flood in your street, your basement, or otherwise needs to be treated as if it were contaminated water. Even if the source of the water is fresh, once it is outside of the pipe, or has fallen on the ground. We have spoken on our blog previously about the types of water contamination and how to treat them. Heavily contaminated water is referred to as black water. The important consideration surrounding black water is that it is not only unsafe to drink, but often is hazardous to be around. When it comes to flood water, here are a few things to consider why the water has become contaminated.

Visibility: With any flood water, as a result of dirt and other contaminates the water will become dark in color and cause a loss in visibility. With this loss of visibility, you are no longer able to see what lies within the water. This could very often be broken glass, sharp objects, and other hazards for tripping and falling.

Dirt: The discoloration causing the lack of visibility comes from the mixing of water with dirt and soil. When a flood occurs from heavy storms and rain, they pick up debris as soon as they meet with the ground. When water picks up this dirt, it can change the consistency of the water, making it more difficult to travel around in, and as a result a hazard if you attempt to navigate it.

Microorganisms: With the contaminates that flood waters pick up, come the organisms that exist within them. Depending on the source, and what may have come as a result of that source the quantity and type may change. Other considerations include contact with wastewater collection that may have overflowed and may be contaminated or even burst pipes.

The combination of these reasons make flood waters dangerous, and you should avoid contact with these situations at all cost. If you have flood damage, contact professionals who have the proper equipment and training to deal with the situation. Call us 24/7 at (916) 991-1522 for professional help from SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda when your next disaster occurs.

Sacramento Campfire Safety Tips for Camping Season 2017

9/7/2017 (Permalink)

Dryer Vents, an Incredible Sacramento Safety Hazard

9/5/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Dryer Vents, an Incredible Sacramento Safety Hazard Clean Vents: Safety, Efficiency, and Savings.

Prevent the loss of your home and danger to you and your family with one simple home checkup.

It is important to make sure that the dryer vent is clean. The dryer vent is a flexible tube that runs from your clothes dryer to the outside of your house. When cleaning the lint from the filter before you run the dryer, you are cleaning the bulk of material produced by the drying process. Beyond this material mistakes, and slowly builds up over time in the hose from your dryer to the outside world. The unfortunate truth about lint is that it is extremely flammable, and this excess buildup causes over 1/3rd of house fires related to dryers.

By keeping this tube clean by inspecting and cleaning it yearly, you can help ensure that this won’t be the cause of your next disaster. If you notice the dryer, or your clothes are unusually warm, or that it is taking longer to dry your clothes it is important to check up on the exit and make sure the vent door can open, and that it is not clogged.

What You Should Think About Before Leasing in Sacramento

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial What You Should Think About Before Leasing in Sacramento Leases are an important decision in your business, be sure to make the right one.

There are lots of factors to consider when finding space for your business, here are a few tips and resources to get you started.

Whether you are starting a new business, expanding your current business, or even moving a business you need to make sure you are making the right decision. Asking the right questions is the best way to finding the information you need.

  1. Who is the Landlord? Who owns the building?

It is important to know who the people you are going to be renting from, and what their background are like. You can change the way you approach negotiation, or have an understanding for what their expectations will be.

  1. How long has the building been owned by the current owners?

Depending on the answer to this, they may have more or less likelihood to keep it, or to possibly sell it in the future. Having the property be sold while you are leasing can be disruptive and should be avoided. New owners will also probably have a high mortgage cost, making renting from them more expensive than normal.

  1. Is the landlord/property manager/building owner close?

Should you need to reach any of these for any reason, it is important that they are close. Whether you need a decision, have a question, or any concerns having all of these easily accessible is a good thing.

  1. What businesses have been in the building, what is the history?

Depending on the age, you may have more considerations for upkeep once you have moved into the space. As well, if a similar business has operated here and had to shut down, you should find out why that happened and possibly avoid the space if it is a concern for your business.

  1. Who were the last tenants and why did they leave?

If you can find these tenants, they can provide valuable information for dealing with the landlord, rental agency, or property management.

  1. Are there plans to sell?

Plans to sell the building you are leasing will prove disruptive to your business. One strategy of a person looking to sell may involve increasing rates to increase the market value of the property.

  1. Who is the largest tenant?

Also known as anchor tenants, these tenants likely pay the most rent for the building and can have large effects on the traffic driven to a particular property. If they are about to move or leave, you should know about it before leasing a property.

From your friends at SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda, we hope the next time you move your local business, or start one you make the right decision. Be sure to check out our other blogs to find out if your business is at risk for mold, and what you can do to prevent mold, water, and fire damage. Does Your Sacramento Home Have a Mold Problem?

8/24/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Sources of Mold in Sacramento

7/27/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Sources of Mold in Sacramento Mold growth on seeds.

We remediate the damage from mold, but where does mold come from?

Mold is a type of fungus that can grow on many surfaces, unfortunately it also uses these surfaces as a source of food. Mold uses its root system, called Hyphae to anchor itself and then slowly disintegrates the material that it is attached to. As the mold eats away at the material the roots grow deeper, causing larger and more structural damage. This is possible in a variety of porous materials including grout, concrete, or brick.

Regardless of building materials, depending on the current climate and conditions, or any previous and recent water damage that went unnoticed mold may grow and compromise these materials. One such place is outside the home, where mold is not often thought to grow. Decorative brick or other surfaces that may become damp can grow mold, as well outside surfaces of the house. When these surfaces, grow mold pets and people may help to carry those spores inside of the house.

Cleaning outside mold can be just as important as inside mold when weather allows for the conditions to be right. Mold can be deposited in many surfaces, and grow on most. As an example pet beds can be perfect breeding grounds for mold as they are moist and often forgotten, and it only takes a small amount of moisture to start growth.

For all types of mold remediation, it is important to contact SERVPRO to inspect and take care of the damage. Mold may be a hazard to you, your family, and your pets and it is important professionals take care of the damage. SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is locally owned, operated, and have trained professionals ready to help. Call 24/7 at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for more information.

More often than not mold is used as a sensational headline or news report. Mold is something that should be taken seriously, but scandalous news reports do harm in public education.

The most common type of mold that is black is called stachybotrys chartarum, a type of mold that produces allergens and irritants. Many types of mold produce allergens and irritants, not just this type of mold. This means that mold of all types should be treated professionally, not just mold that is black in color. Treat all types of mold with an air of caution, by reading our tips and help on this topic.

Given that mold with all types of colors and appearances can be harmful, be sure to call professionals at SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda to help you immediately. With 24/7 support, call us at 916-991-1522 or visit our website for more information and tips.

What to Do When Your Device Falls in Water

7/7/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage What to Do When Your Device Falls in Water If you act fast, it may not be too late.

It’s something that will eventually happen to all of us, but with proper care you might be able to reverse your mistake.

Water itself isn’t conductive, but any water that isn’t specifically deionized will have minerals in it that will make it conductive. When water gets into your device, it will create a pathway between two points where electricity shouldn’t flow, creating a short.

  1. Get your device out of the water as fast as possible. Don’t put yourself in danger to do so, but grab it as soon as the mistakes been made. The longer your phone is in water, it becomes increasingly more likely that water will seep into your phone. This includes water resistant phones as well, water resistance doesn’t not mean waterproof and they are prone to allowing water inside of them under pressure as well.
  2. Turn your device off. This is the best way to ensure that a short does not occur if water is inside of the device.
  3. Dry device phone off as best as you can externally, but don’t use blow dryers. Blow dryers can heat the device and damage components. If you have silica packets or rice around, leave your phone in a container with them to allow the water to be wicked away.
  4. Wait a few days, water can be difficult to leave a phone and the rice or silica will need time to work.
  5. Turn it on to test. You may be in luck! Most phones, even if they still work, will always show that they have been water damaged with indicators that change color when this occurs.

For all of your other water damage needs, call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda 24/7 at 916-991-1522, or visit our website for more information about water, mold, and fire damage.

SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda provide professional fire damage services for commercial and non commercial needs

When a fire damage event occurs at your Sacramento business or commercial property, it is important to get damage repaired as quickly as possible. Fires often leave businesses or commercial properties in a state where business cannot continue, which is bad for your business. Keeping downtime to a minimum is crucial.

SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda is “Faster to Any Disaster”

Here are the first steps you should take with your business or home after a fire disaster.

Determine the scale of work required:
The first step in any Sacramento fire, commercial or residential, is to have a professional assessment done. Although it may be tempting to enter the property yourself after a fire to see the damage that has occurred; we strongly recommend against this. Fire damage creates a toxic and possibly harmful environment that should only be first assessed by professionals. Professionals will need to assess possible structural damage, as well as water damage from the efforts of firefighters. Further, smoke damage may cause damage throughout the Sacramento property even though the fire only affected one area.

Explore your options for repair:
With fire damage and possible water damage to your Sacramento home, there are many steps from start to finish to make your property “Like It Never Even Happened”. Depending on the extent of the damage, drywall may need to be removed if it has been damaged by smoke or water. Other damage may include carpeting, furniture, including upholstered furniture which will need to be professionally cleaned. By calling SERVPRO we will be there quickly and prepared to hand all of your cleaning needs after your Sacramento fire.

Guarantee timely results:
When working with SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda, you are receiving a service that handles all aspects of the damage restoration. This makes us the most timely, effective, and professional option to get your Sacramento commercial property or business back up and running as soon as possible.

Why You Need Professional Help With Your Sacramento Fire Damage

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda can restore your fire damaged Sacramento property when you need it

When a fire damage event occurs at your Sacramento home or business, it is important to get damage repaired as quickly as possible. Fires often leave homes and businesses in a state the space is unusable. Keeping downtime to a minimum is crucial so you may get back to normal, “Like it never even happened”.

After a fire has been eliminated, the largest secondary damage due to a fire becomes an immediate concern. Plenty of water damage can occur in the course of fighting a fire, resulting in damage to furniture, clothing, drywall, your ceiling, and floor. By utilizing state of the art techniques and equipment, SERVPRO quickly mitigates this secondary damage using wet-vacs, fans, dehumidifiers, and pumps.

Smoke is the next concern that needs professional attention after a fire. Smoke damage is quite substantive, and not just surface level. Smoke damage can become embedded in your walls, carpet, flooring, and furniture. Without professional assistance, this smoke damage will stay and linger for years after fire damage has occurred. Beyond this, soot also has a long lasting effect, and causes cosmetic damage by staining and discoloring your property.

It is tempting after a disaster such as fire damage to your Sacramento home to carry out the restoration process on without professional assistance, but the project will take longer, and be far less effective and returning your property to its original state. Hiring SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda will ensure that the project gets done right. Our professionals will help you to salvage your goods with our IICRC-trained technicians, and to solve the aforementioned issues caused by a fire with our specialized equipment and technicians.

When the unthinkable occurs, feel free to call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda 24/7 at (916) 991-1522. We are a locally owned business with the national resources to solve your home or commercial needs.

Using Electronics Safely: Preventing Your Next Fire Disaster

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

Properly using your cords and electrical outlets can help to prevent fires in your home, keeping you and your family safe

From your friends at SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda, here are a few tips on staying safe with your electrical appliances in your home. When it comes to electricity, the degradation of cords and sockets can cause a “short” to occur between the wires, this sparking may cause a fire.

  1. Socket Guards - Install socket guards when not using a plug, they are cheap and simple and can protect children from injury
  2. Unplug, Not Pull - When unplugging an appliance, make sure to pull from the base of the plug and not the cord to prevent damage
  3. Replace Damaged Cords - If you spot a damaged cord or cable, be sure to replace it before the damage becomes worse.
  4. Running cords or cables under your carpet can cause them to degrade over time when people step on them, and if they do become damaged you cannot see it
  5. Know Your Power - Check the wattage rating on cords to avoid overloading them. Don’t overload any circuit, don’t daisy chain adapters so that you can plug more into one socket
  6. Leave The Ground - Never cut the third prong and remove the grounding ability from high-powered electronics
  7. When placing extension cables, don’t leave them hanging on metal surfaces, heated surfaces, or sharp surfaces
  8. When buying extension cords, ensure they are certified by organizations such as “UL Listed”

With these helpful tips, SERVPRO from North Highlands and Rio Linda hope you and your family will continue to be safe and disaster free. For all of your other cleaning and restoration needs visit our website or call us at (916) 991-1522.

Mold: Not Always a Visible Issue

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

When it comes to mold, it's not always the water you can see, but the water you can't.

Water damage big or small can lead rise to a serious mold problem. Small, unnoticeable leaks with little tangible water loss are just as susceptible to causing large mold issues as larger water losses. When water damage occurs, mold is a type of secondary water damage, that is why it is important to hire professionals such as SERVPRO to dry and restore these water damage issues before mold growth spreads throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. When it comes to mold restoration, here are the tools and techniques that we use to ensure the job has been done properly.

Moisture sensors, and moisture meters are both used to detect moisture on your walls, baseboards, and carpets. Moisture meters are a little more invasive, and detect moisture content of materials, with accurate results.

We can also measure the temperature and relative humidity of your property, allowing us to know the exact conditions we are attempting to dry your home under. Weather can always affect the effectiveness of drying techniques.

Agents are dispersed to help fight, and kill mold by penetrating sites with odor causing residues. Fungicides can also be injected into cavities to be effective against hard to reach mold.

When it comes to mold remediation, you need a professional. Call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda for immediate, 24/7 help with your mold issue at (916) 991-1522.

Prevent Mold in your Sacramento Kitchen

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

Your Sacramento kitchen provides the perfect conditions for mold, so how can you prevent it?

Kitchens are one of the most susceptible areas to mold in a Sacramento home. Given the moderate temperatures in Sacramento, and the damp and cool environments that are present in your kitchen, this is a prime area for mold to occur. For walls, you may want to use mold resistant paint because of the inherent added moisture in the kitchen area. This type of paint is water resistant and will prevent mold penetrating from the paint into the walls.

Removing standing water, and thus extra humidity and growth spots, are one way to prevent mold. The dryer you keep your kitchen, the less moisture you are allowing into the air for possible mold growth. As well, keeping surfaces clean can help prevent water sneaking into cracks, crevices, or under objects that may start mold growth.

Regularly opening windows in your kitchen can help to reduce humidity, and thus mold. Good ventilation will prevent the conditions that allow for mold growth. When you do find mold, be sure to contact SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda to take the preventative mold remediation measures you need to keep your house clean. Call us at (916) 991-1522 or visit our website for more information on our services.

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

In the time directly after a flood or water loss, minutes matter. Preventative measures can help negate further damage to your Sacramento property.

  1. Do not touch or make contact if the water is sewage or otherwise contaminated
  2. Do not spread contaminated water by walking from affected areas to unaffected areas

Types of Water Contamination

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO cleans sewage backups, too! Here is what qualifies for each category of contaminated water.

Sewer backups ARE an emergency. Water from these systems may contain many bacteria, microbes, or viruses. It is important to get the qualified help you need to tackle these issues safely with the proper equipment. There are three classifications for water contamination, and when working with SERVPRO we properly classify these types in order to provide you with the service that you need.

Clean Water: This is most commonly found from a clean source of water, such as a leaky faucet, water main, or supply line. Water damage is water damage, so even though this water is drinkable water, it still does damage to your home and needs to be taken care of accordingly.

Gray Water: This is “relatively clean” water that has been used in some capacity by a washing machine, shower, or sink. This category includes water with some urine but no feces, from a toilet overflow. This water can still contain bacteria or viruses, and can quickly turn into “category 3: black water” if untreated. Contact with this type of water should be avoided.

Black Water: Most contaminated type of water, this is sewage. This type of water can cause severe illness if ingested. Contact with this type of water should be avoided. Black water can also be from flooding rivers or streams, as this water has never been filtered from the environment and may still contain microbes, bacteria, or viruses.

If you have a clean water, gray water, or black water loss event, call SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda to get professional help with your water restoration needs. (916)-991-1522, or visit our website.

What Kind of Storm Damage Might Your Property Face?

6/21/2017 (Permalink)

When this winter hits, here are the most common types of damage you may face from storms.

Water Damage and Flooding:
Most common and destructive is flooding. Floods can occur from heavy rainfall in a few different ways. For homes with basements, water can rise above and overflow your sump pumps. For one story houses, flooding may occur on the bottom story. In either case, a minor flood sends contaminated water through your house causing damage.

High Wind Conditions:
During a strong rain or thunderstorm, high wind conditions can affect the outside of your Sacramento home or property. This damage can come in the form of downed trees, damaging roofs, breaking windows and their frames or shutters. This vulnerabilities unsolved will only get worse over time and give rise to further damage from storm conditions.

If and when a storm causes damage to help, contact SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda by visiting our website or calling us at (916) 991-1522

Sacramento Campfire Safety Tips for the 2017 Camping Season

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Sacramento Campfire Safety Tips for the 2017 Camping Season A safe fire pit will make for a safer trip, for your family and the forest.

Tips to stay safe this camping season, from SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda

Preparing for Bad Weather

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Preparing for Bad Weather Local Sacramento home after this tree fell as a result of strong wind conditions.

Regardless of the season, bad weather can strike at anytime. What bad weather is might change person to person, but its smart to prepare for difficult weather in advance. Stockpiling a few items and preparing an emergency kit will help you stay safe. Here are a few items you can throw together for your home emergency kit.

  • A battery operated weather radio will allow you to stay up to date with information, even when the power goes out.
  • Bad weather doesn’t always come when you're at home, so prepare your car for these situations as well. Make that next trip to Tahoe this summer just that much safer!
  • Having a few extra non-expirable food items for these situations can be a pertinent decision as well. Bottled water is a must, but some other common items to buy include granola bars, soups, dry milk, and anything that comes in a can.
  • If the next big storm in Sacramento causes damage to your property, be sure to call SERVPRO of Rio Linda and North Highlands to help you make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (916) 991-1522, or visit our website for more information.

Common Mold Locations in Your Sacramento Home

6/20/2017 (Permalink)

Where does mold come from?

Body: Mold spores are constantly floating around just about everywhere.

Start Your Year Off Right - SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda Tips to Stay Organized

Commercial Start Your Year Off Right - SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda Tips to Stay Organized Office Organization

Need to keep your Sacramento office fresh? Here are a few tips to help you out.

  1. Give everything a place. If you need more storage, add more storage. Making sure you have a place to store the things you need is important, making sure it's stored properly means you can find it later. Organization is key in efficiency.
  2. File paperwork regularly. Walking into a messy office makes work more difficult and daunting. Avoid this by sorting and filing things properly in your newfound storage, so you can find them again.
  3. Move paperwork off your desk. If there isn’t somewhere to store every little thing, it ends up in the last place it was left; your desk.
  4. Get rid of what you don’t need. If it is not absolutely necessary, toss it. Does this item have unnecessary multiples? Does it have a purpose? Is it outdated? Did you even remember you had it before you started your cleaning? Do you really need it?
  5. Address your problem areas. Find out what is the messiest part of your office, and focus on that first. Often one large problem area can spill into other problem areas. Put things in their permanent locations to avoid the cluttering of them in the first place.
  6. Hide your cables. Cables can often be a source of mess, and a safety hazard. Cable ties, cable organizers, or hidden areas can be a great way to keep them neat and tidy.
  7. Clean and disinfect. Do it yourself, or hire a professional. We can often forget about something as simple as cleaning the office, but is certainly worth the effort.
  8. Keep your computers clean, too. Sorting your files away on your computer can make an old computer seem fresh again. Being able to find everything you need in a quick way can help you on task and efficient.

Whether its giving tips on how to declutter or providing 24/7 emergency services, SERVPRO of Rio Linda and North Highlands is here to help you.

Business Types At-Risk for Commercial Mold Damage in Sacramento

6/19/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Can Remediate Mold Infestations in All Kinds of Sacramento Businesses

Call us at (916) 991-1522, or view our mold services here.

SERVPRO of North Highlands and Rio Linda Hope You Have Fun and Avoid Fires this Fourth of July!

15,600 fires are started every year by fireworks, according to the National Fire Protection Association. By taking the proper safety precautions, many of these fires could have been easily avoided. If you want to enjoy the celebrations without the risks of fire, go to a professional show. Professional shows are big, fun, and most importantly- safe.

If you still can’t resist having your own firework celebration, here is a list of the recommended safety precautions from the National Council on Firework Safety.

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting
  • A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities, and never give fireworks to children
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix, save your drinks for after the show
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles
  • Never relight a “dud” firework, wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them into metal or glass containers
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day
  • FAA regulations prohibit the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage.
  • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department

Sacramento Flood Damage - Facts about Flood Damage in Sacramento

Storm Damage Sacramento Flood Damage - Facts about Flood Damage in Sacramento Extreme flood damage as a result of flash flooding.

SERVPRO of North Highlands & Rio Linda here to give you facts about flood damage in Sacramento

  • Toilet leaks will appear as a small leakage from the base of the toilet, check for these to see if this needs to be repaired

Is Your Sacramento Home At-Risk for Water Heater Failure?

6/19/2017 (Permalink)
